In 1951, the artist and film-maker Cobra, Jean Raine, organized an exhibition of Abstract Cinema in Liege, Belgium, which saw the participation of the masters of cinema in the 1920s and 30s – Léger, Duchamp, Dulac, Ernst, Veronesi, Len Lye, Richter, Henry Moore and others.
Today, in 2008 (you see the program 2008), after the success of last year’s first Abstracta exhibition of abstract cinema featuring 200 films from around the world, ZAC Association and the Link Campus University of Malta are thrilled to host the festival’s new edition, an event where the authors of this cinema, as old as its narrative counterpart, can meet each other, get to know each other and exchange ideas.
Currently, the films of Abstracta are visible in the Island of the Link Campus on “Second Life”, to the following adress

The definition of abstract cinema as offered by Rudolf Kurtz in 1926, doesn’t seem to sufficiently encompass this vast field of conceptual art. Subsequently, greatly inspired by the thesis of George Roque(What Is Abstract Art?, 2004) and, even more so, by the 1951 essay of Jean Raine(“Fondement d’une étude sur le film abstrait,”) we have delineated abstract cinema as the one “that doesn’t tell stories.” We have further detailed the conceptual characteristics of abstraction in the following pages. Another ambition of the exhibition is to find a way for abstract cinema, plundered by the narrative cinema, the music video and advertising, to take its rightful place as an independant and productive resource.
